Dishonored is the latest in the line of knockout Bethesda releases, set for launch sometime in 2012. Very few details are known, and only just recently have some screenshots come our way, so not a whole lot is out there. What we do know is that the player will take the role of Corvo, the former bodyguard of the Empress, falsely accused of her murder and imprisoned. Using a combination of supernatural powers, some unique gadgets and highly trained combat skills, Corvo embarks on a crusade against the Lord Regent, responsible for the coup which leads to the Empress’s death. The usual campaign of causing hate and discontent follow, but the game veers away from the shoot ‘em up style.
The trick to the game supposedly is to realize that not one power, talent, or ability gives the advantage. You will have to rely upon a combination of them to figure out creative solutions to obstacles standing in your way. Different examples have been given, such as stopping time to create a distraction and then making your way in the opposite direction, escaping during the chaos. The point is, straight up combat is not the answer, you will have to use your head, and get creative it seems. Better yet, a sort of in game tracking system measures how much hell you raise, and changes the story elements as a reaction, it’s not intended to be a punishment, but rather serves as a thematic element to change the story a bit.
Dishonored is being created by Arkane Studios, known for Arx Fatalis and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, and represents its first release since coming under the wing of Bethesda. The creative team behind the game has had their hands in several smash hits, including Thief, the original Deus Ex, and Half Life 2, it is easy to see the influence these works have had on the game, at least from these images. As more details emerge, you will be advised.
